Often when repairing a screen, you can reuse the old spline. However, if the old spline is damaged, you’ll need a replacement. Spline comes in various sizes, influenced by regional window suppliers and screen frame types. For example, .250 size spline replaces 1/4" aluminum spline common in mid-century homes and is easy for DIY installations.
If you're replacing thin fiberglass insect screen with thicker material like pet screen, choose a smaller spline size. For example, replace .165 spline with .150 when using pet screen. The right spline depends on both screen material and the channel size.
